So… things haven’t been going exactly smooth since we moved into the new house. We did buy a brand new house, therefore assuming we would have fewer problems (accepting that no one really has NO problems in a house) during our ownership and also scoring us a complete warranty on the home.
When we got to the house after moving on Saturday, I went to take a shower around midnight hoping to crawl snuggly, warmly, and cleanly into bed. We had no hot water. I ran the water for more than 5 minutes thinking that it may just take awhile to circulate since no one had been using it. The hot water never came. After tears of frustration, we finally loaded in the car and drove to the apartment where we both showered, then came home and I had a random idea when we got home. All of our mechanics have separate ‘maintenance breakers’ on them, so that you don’t have to go to the breaker box to cut power, you can do it standing at the unit. We had checked all the normal breakers, and even the maintenance breaker, but for some reason I thought “What if it’s in upside down? It can’t hurt to try.” I flipped the breaker thingybobber and immediately the hot water heater came on. VICTORY! I woke up to HOT water. Yay!
Tuesday night we ate dinner out with friends who had helped us move and when we got home the heat was not kicking on and the house was 65. AAHHHH… So I called Nest (we have a super fancy thermostat called Nest… they’re pretty cool and their service is GREAT!) and chatted and got the heat turned on last night. The guy was nice but he kind of made me think that our heat pump was broken, which irritated me because… again… it’s brand freaking new.
All was well and warm after that, and I had instructions to call back and try to talk through the final steps with someone the next day when it wasn’t so cold in the house and it wasn’t so late. I did, and basically… the first guy was wrong, my heat is supposed to be kicking on my “aux heat” because heat pumps (what we have) are not supposed to run if it’s below 32 degrees outside. HELLO! WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF ICEPOCALYPSE #4. How warm do you think it is?! Anywho, I believe the heat is working correctly and that we are in business! :)
Back to Tuesday night. It was my last night before going back to work, and i crawled into bed exhausted after moving and ready to sleeeeeeep for a hundred years. About 4:12 am I wake up and hear a chirp. I originally think it’s in a dream, so I get up, go to the bathroom, and get back in bed. It chirps again. Then I’m paranoid that it’s the stupid thermostat that’s beeping at me and something is wrong… I investigate, but it is in fact a smoke detector. Jake is awake by this point and he gets on a chair to push the button to turn it off. That makes the freaking smoke detector go off. I said “Why don’t you try holding the button down?” WROOOOONNNNGGGGGGG! WORST IDEA EVER! Holding down the button tests all the smoke alarms in the house. And they don’t turn off until they’ve finished testing. We tried unplugging the one that was chirping from the ceiling, we tried taking out and replacing the battery, we tried everything and still it wouldn’t turn off. Finally, after 6 minutes it stopped blaring, and didn’t chirp again. Thank GOD. Bleary eyed we went back to bed before going to work the next day.
As you can see, it’s been quite eventful around here, not counting the moving fiascos we’ve encountered or the scratches in my wood floors or the paint damage to my walls. :(
My advice to anyone moving anywhere. Pay the money, and hire a moving company. It’ll be easier on your house and your relationship. And then, someone will fix your floors when they scratch them. :)
